On March 2, 2006 85 child
residents of the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless celebrated the Grand
Opening of the William R. and Frances B. Barnett Children’s Building. The building’s
opening draws to completion a three-year Capital Campaign.
D.R. Horton and the W.G.
Pitts Company generously donated construction of the nearly 2,000-square-foot
building. The new addition to the Sulzbacher campus will house the children’s activities, which include: Boy and Girl Scouts,
after-school tutoring, karate lessons, art classes, and children’s case
management.
“This is an exciting time for us,” said Sherry Burns, President/CEO
of the Center. “We are thankful to the many donors who contributed to
this project. The children staying at the Center have a new place to learn
and play thanks to their generosity.”
The Frances B. Barnett
Charitable Trust provided the lead gift for the project, with site preparation
donated by the J.B. Coxwell Company. Additional donors to the Children’s
Building include: Mary and Jim Winston, the Ralph N. and Anina M. Walter
Charitable Trust, Toni and Andy Crawford, Ronald McDonald Charities, Panera
Bread, the Earl Poitevent Family, the Hugh Magevney Family, Julie Handley,
Broward Milam, Linda Lanier, the Block Family Foundation, Valerie and Kirby
Chritton, Shannon and Ian Hardington, and the Family of Adam Gross.
The Children’s Building is the first completed of two construction projects
in the works on the Sulzbacher campus. Construction began in summer of 2005 on
an 18,000-square-foot medical facility, which will also house the Center’s
administrative offices. The medical building is set for completion in September
2006.
